just words

Talking in words that last forever
And pledging them all to you explains the Bee Gees
Is the only means I have to win your heart
Even if the words I utter leave you in doubt

And what if those words don’t come easy
How can I convince you that I love you
Asks FR David whose music is his strength
So through a simple song he expresses his feelings

Perhaps you wouldn’t need to say a thing to me
If you showed me how you feel exhorts the Extremes
Because actions speak louder than words can
Talk is cheap, so back up your empty promises

Grand gesture’s virtue is what the Proclaimers extol
To prove one’s love it is sometimes necessary
I understand what it means to walk a thousand miles
Like some modern Odysseus only to collapse at your door

So here’s my compromise because I only have words to offer
I promise to weave you a tapestry so intricate
Through many years of labouring as a writer
With a vocabulary o’er the decades painstakingly acquired

So here it goes: with a smidgen of Bee Gees, a pinch of FR David
I’ll add while stirring into that a teaspoonful of the Extremes
Last, drizzle a thimble of Proclaimers, and make sure it’s all well blended
Poured lovingly into a frosted glass, topped with a dollop of whipped cream

A recipe to say that I want you plain and simple
Straight from the heart that’s exactly how I feel
Take it or leave it because that’s my humble overture
Not too shabby nor too grand, with just the right amount of eager
