In the darkness of the rocking bus
My wandering thoughts find you
I close my eyes to see your face
Glowing in the morning sunlight – smiling
Thinking of that letter you wrote me
Read thousand times over in my mind
Above the roaring engine
I can hear your voice lilting like a melody
Again I see us in your room
Talking, laughing,
Seaweed candy and a glass of Coke
Music in the background – drifting
Who was singing I can’t recall
Only you remain in the jumble of images
Having lunch and chocolate ice cream
And me saying I could never turn you down
Taxis to the bank and back
Hurried goodbyes
Sorry I’ve to leave so abruptly
The cab’s already waiting outside
Almost changed my mind about leaving the night before
Wishing I could stay longer as I shut the taxi door
Opened your letter in the cab
Read it once, and then again
Thoughts turn from things we did
To dwelling on things we didn’t do
So much left unsaid even after I called
Wishing we had more time to follow through
The “some days” we left piled high
Will be the stuff that dreams
Will be woven from
For some day in the foggy future
Perhaps is when the dream takes form
The bus rolls to a stop
My reverie broken
By something
Totally inconsequential
And then, it starts again
That rocking and the roaring
Once more I close my eyes
Try to sleep I tell myself
But those thoughts just keep wandering
Somehow always finding
Their way home
To you
* written in the distant past
